Rapport

Thaiwijit PuangKasemsomboon & Somyot Hananuntasuk

28 Aug 2003 - 26 Oct 2003
This exhibition attempts to explore three components of artistic process shared between the two artists and of their own. It reflects on inter-textual experience, based on interpretation and re-interpretations of images produced.

The first component comprises of their individual paintings. For Thaiwijt, they are large paintings that were completed when the artist undertook a residency program in Munich, Germany during late 2002. For Somyot, who has been based in Munich for more than 20 years, there will be a showcase of his recent paintings produced both in Germany and Thailand.

It was also during the residency that Thaiwijit suggested to Somyot about the possibility of experimenting spontaneously on each other’s composition in sequence, with each supplementing the previous one.

Bringing with them their colourful palettes, they both equally monopolise the texture and form of their expressions under one panel – be it oil on canvas. In the end, 8 paintings were completed and the end results reflected a profundity in which the artists accept the individuality of each other with openness and shared inspiration. This series makes up the second component of this exhibition.

Unlike the previous series where they both worked closely in each other’s presence under one studio in Munich, the final component is a process during which both send artworks to each other via airmail and continue this overlapping/juxtaposition way of approaching the pieces.

The apparent distant and presence away from each other will then create a different spontaneity and possibility in that there is no ‘comfort zone’ where they can be in a position to comment immediately before and after the process has started.

In abstract compositions, the dynamism of colours and the formal methodology of brushstrokes applied constitute greatly to the nature of the final expression. Thus, the exploration here challenges both artist’s ebb and flow of ideas, which in turn, questions the characteristic of whether can or should an artwork be qualified to exist only in accordance to one artist’s own style/discourse or not.
