Pixel Horizon

Montri Toemsombat

09 Feb 2012 - 08 Apr 2012

Celebrating the year 2012 with an exhibition by Montri Toemsombat, a highly distinctive Thai contemporary artist whose work has been recognized by national and international art institutions. Drawing inspiration from his personal experience, Montri’s latest collection of work reveals his most intimate thoughts yet.

Born and raised by liberal parents, Montri has been blessed with a privilege to embrace his homosexuality ever since he was young. Growing up in a small village, Montri often fantasized about traveling to foreign countries to expand his social and cultural horizons. His fascination unintentionally brought upon a milestone revelation of the intricacy relationship between society and sexuality; especially, sexual rights which required great length of determination to thoroughly understand such pressing issues. The complexity of social structure also leads to a heinous act of sexual oppression where the society gains a full control of censorship and regulations. Concerned with rising social issues, Montri fearlessly attempts to express people’s greatest desire to coexist peacefully and the hope for better solutions.

Pixel Horizon presents Montri’s views on the disrupted issues caused by social structure through a pixel manipulation technique previously seen in his digital photography work, Nanothailand, which exhibited at 100 Tonson Gallery and 13th Jakarta Biennale in 2008. Heavily inspired by the effect of homosexuality on society and culture, Pixel Horizon is intended to create awareness and cultivate knowledge on the crucial subjects among individuals, society, and beyond.
